looks like its time for another PSU thread. with the recent trend towards bigger PSUs, its important to remember one thing.

you dont need that many watts...

I'm running with an ultra modular power supply atm. I haven't had any problems with it yet, but once I upgrade I'll probably steer away from modular psu's.

that's really the point of the thread, it's not about running out and buying a new PSU tomorrow, but if you're looking towards your next build, I highly recommend a quality single rail 80 PLUS PSU over the +1000W modular gimmick.

Even reputable sites like jonnyGURU will often say there's nothing wrong with modular, its all just FUD, but my point is does the sole advantage of modular really outweigh the extra cost or ANY potential issues. To me modular is pointless, having built tons of systems, and not once having issues w/ airflow/routing. It's lazy cable management.

for the most part, these are over the top for now, but its nice to see progress from the inside-out.

I believe modular power supplies are better on low-end systems these days anyways because... well they DO look better because there are less cables being used.

In our case we are more susceptible to use every power cord available to us... which makes modular kind of stupid anyways since you have everything plugged up.

You very likely do not need a 1kW PSU, but just so you know who makes the better ones...

BFG Tech, best known for their graphics cards, also branded PSUs. Past tense, as they apparently are closing down shop. So much for those lifetime warranties...

More importantly, Jon Gerow of JonnyGuru.com, the best PSU site on the web, is now without a job. He was product manager for BFGs PSU business. Please visit his site if you need any info on a particular PSU...
